Orthopedics is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis,
treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of injuries and diseases
of the body’s musculoskeletal system. This includes bones,
joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Orthopedic care
may involve a variety of treatments including medications, casts,
splints, physical therapy or surgery. The doctors who practice
in this specialty are called orthopedic surgeons or orthopedists.
Orthopedics is a very diverse specialty involving treatment of
a variety of diseases and conditions including:
Fractures, dislocations
Torn ligaments and sprains
Tendon problems
Ruptured discs
While it’s estimated that about half of orthopedic treatment
today does not involve surgery* many conditions are successfully
treated with surgery. Many orthopedic surgical procedures no longer
involve major operations because doctors can use very small instruments
called arthroscopes and endoscopes to do the surgery. For example,
in the case of knee surgery the surgeon would insert the instrument
into a small incision near the joint. Because the instrument is
fitted with a small camera, the surgeon can see inside the joint
to diagnose and treat a problem. These instruments have contributed
to the fact that many procedures that formerly were done in the
hospital are now done as outpatient procedures.
